Ithaca Area Neighborhoods

Collegetown - Large neighborhood just off Cornell Central Campus - home to many of Cornell's students. Collegetown is a popular and lively area that has many different ethnic restaurants and bars, as well as many different shops and businesses including CollegeTown Video, Fontana's Shoes, TakeNoteŽ and Collegetown Candy and Nuts. Great place for undergraduates and those wanting to be near the action. Housing rental rates tend to reflect the popularity of the area and can be higher than in most other areas. Short drive or walking distance to downtown Ithaca (the Commons).

Downtown - A diverse environment that is centrally located in Ithaca. Downtown is home to many families, professionals, singles, and students. Its central location provides convenient access to Cornell University, Ithaca College, and most Ithaca attractions. Parks, shops, and restaurants are scattered throughout, especially on the Ithaca Commons, which is a popular destination for many Ithacans. Affordable rental housing available; very good bus lines.

Northeast - A quiet neighborhood that attracts families and older students. Conveniently located near Pyramid Mall, Triphammer Mall, and many supermarkets and family restaurants including Friendly's and Applebees. Close to Tompkins County Regional Airport.

Belle Sherman - Great area for families with its proximity to schools and parks. Still convenient to Cornell, but with none of the hustle and bustle of Collegetown.

East Hill - Another great neighborhood for families, professionals, and older students. Close to Cornell as well as shopping and entertainment including a bowling alley, major supermarket, a health club, and various restaurants.

North Campus - A nature-filled residential environment that is home to many students and families. Right off Cornell's Central Campus, North Campus is a popular destination for those looking for a quieter, calmer environment or something off the beaten path.

Cayuga Heights - Lovely neighborhood with many elegant residences. Popular with families, some older students, and many professors from Cornell and Ithaca College. Perfect for those seeking quiet and privacy. Close driving distance to malls and supermarkets.

South Hill - Mostly tree-lined residential area, home to students, families and professionals, located right by Ithaca College, a short-drive or walk to Downtown. Connected by picturesque footbridge to one of Ithaca's main thorough ways, State Street, allowing walking distance access to Collegetown and Cornell University Campus.

Shore - Comprised of East Shore and West Shore, the Shore is a great area right on Cayuga Lake. Perfect for those who enjoy lakeside living with lovely views. About 20-minute drive to Cornell and Ithaca College Campuses, and approximately 10-minute drive to downtown Ithaca (the Commons).

West Campus - Another charming neighborhood that is just off Cornell's Central Campus. An even mix of students and families, similar to that of North Campus.

West Hill - Residential area with professionals and families. Close to parks, downtown Ithaca, Cayuga Lake and the spectacular Taughannock Falls.

Outlying Towns - A wonderful array of affordable housing exists for those who have transportation and are willing to travel 10 or more miles to town. Neighborhoods include Dryden, Lansing, Groton, Trumansburg, Danby and Newfield.

Fall Creek - A quiet, residential neighborhood a few blocks from Downtown. Caters to families, professionals and students. Close to Ithaca Falls, Ithaca Commons, Cornell and Ithaca College.

Eastern Heights - A quiet, residential neighborhood in a rural setting, Eastern Heights is a great area for those who have transportation and want space to roam. Still close to Cornell and to East Hill Plaza for shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Cornell University

Founded In 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White.

Opened October 7, 1868. Morrill Hall was the first building constructed on the main Ithaca campus, which today includes more than 260 major buildings on 745 acres.

Affiliations
Cornell is a private endowed university and the federal land-grant institution of New York State. It is a member of the Ivy League and a partner of the State University of New York.

Ithaca College

Coeducational and nonsectarian, Ithaca is a nationally recognized comprehensive college of 6,200.

Location
In the center of the Finger Lakes region, Ithaca College's campus is 60 miles north of Binghamton and 60 miles south of Syracuse. Ithaca, a city of 29,000, is served by US Airways and by Greyhound Bus Lines, ShortLine, and other bus companies.

History
Founded in 1892 as the Ithaca Conservatory of Music, the College was located in downtown Ithaca until the 1960s, when the present campus was built on South Hill overlooking Cayuga Lake.

Student Body
Enrollment is approximately 6,200: 2,700 men and 3,500 women. Some 300 students are enrolled in graduate programs. Approximately 70 percent of undergraduates reside on campus. Nearly every state and 77 countries are represented in the student population.
